HEALTHCARE: Messino Cancer Center opens in Spruce Pine

SPRUCE PINE – A satellite office of Messino Cancer Centers is now open in Spruce Pine. The local branch is in a portion of the former Fred’s location at 11921 S. 226 Highway in Grassy Creek Shopping Center and is operated by Dr. Charles “Chuck” Bryan, M.D., and Dr. Brent Skiver, D.O.

SPRUCE PINE – The new year got off to a great start for The Quartz Corp., as the company has purchased the former USG facility located on Altapass Highway.  The Quartz Corp. acquired the property Jan. 1 with plans to continue and grow the operation at the Mica production plant.

Beekeeping school Beekeeping School 2020 begins Thursday, Feb. 6, at Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine. The class is from 6-9 p.m. every Thursday through March 26.

Wrestlers fare well at conference tourney

LEDGER – Several members of the Mitchell High School wrestling team finished in the top three this past week at the Western Highlands Conference Wrestling Tournament at Mitchell. “We had our ups-and-downs,” said Ed Duncan, Mitchell head wrestling coach.
