Scottie Williams Smallwood of Spruce Pine was pronounced dead at the scene following a nighttime collision last week.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, on June 17 at around 9:49 p.m., Smallwood was traveling east on U.S. Highway 19E when a pickup truck driving west attempted to make a left turn in front of him.
Smallwood collided with the pickup and was killed.
Highway Patrol representatives did not release the name of the pickup-truck driver immediately, but did confirm that some initial charges had been filed against him.
The initial charges against the pickup-truck driver were misdemeanor death by vehicle and a left-turn violation. However, the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
