Toe River Health District Concludes Salmonella Investigation in Mitchell County

LEDGER — Last week, the Toe River Health District concluded its investigation into the foodborne illness outbreak associated with El Ranchero at 203 Locust Ave. in Spruce Pine.

According to a release, thanks to rapid public health action and the restaurant's cooperation in putting control measures in place, no new illnesses have been reported since those measures were implemented.

Laboratory testing confirmed the illness was caused by Salmonella, a common foodborne pathogen. A total of five confirmed cases were linked to the outbreak.

Survey findings indicate that cross-contamination in the kitchen likely contributed to the spread of the illness, rather than a single food item. The restaurant has taken steps to prevent and correct food safety issues.

"The Toe River Health Department is committed to protecting the health and safety of our residents remains our highest priority," said Mason Gardner, Toe River Health district health director. "Our staff will continue to follow-up with the restaurant and offer ongoing support. We appreciate the community's cooperation throughout this investigation."
