Changing forests: What is causing so many trees to die?

I have hunted in the same hollow for the past 10 years, giving me ample time to stare at every tree within eyesight while spending hours in the stand waiting for deer. In those 10 years, I have watched the mature hemlock trees lose their scented, dark-green needles and die.

Lowery, Shook headed to state

MOUNT AIRY – Mitchell High School wrestlers Dylan Lowery and Samuel Shook are headed to the State 1A Individual Championship after strong efforts this past weekend at the 1A West Regional Finals at Mount Airy High School.

McKinney makes it official

LEDGER – More big plays are still to come for Tyler McKinney.  The 6-foot 2-inch, 200-pound Mitchell High School senior will play college football at Division I Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs after he graduates in May.

RTCC and RTAC The Rural Transportation Coordinating Committee and the Rural Transportation Advisory Committee of the High Country RPO will meet Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the High Country Council of Governments, 468 New Market Boulevard in Boone. The RTCC meets at 10 a.m. and the RTAC meets a 2 p.m.

Annual History Bee is March 26

The fourth annual History Bee is 6 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the Kathy Miller Auditorium at Mitchell High School. The public is invited to attend.  Participants in the History Bee are eligible to win cash.
