Varsity basketball teams excel

Ed Duncan MNJ Sports While Mitchell’s student body was busy with semester exams last week, the varsity basketball teams were active on the court, securing victories in three of their four matchups.

Wrestling team hits the mat with wins

The Mitchell Mountaineer wrestling team had a good week last week, going 6-2 for the week. The Mountaineers started the week with a good showing at the McDowell Quad, taking on host McDowell, AC Reynolds, and Erwin High School.

Hoops season opens

The Mitchell Mountaineers traveled to Weaverville for their basketball season opener against North Buncombe High School. The junior varsity girls opened their season with a loss to North Buncombe in overtime.
The Harris Blue Devil boys were 2-0 last week on the hardwood.

Harris Blue Devils defeat Avery

On Monday, Nov. 13, Harris Middle School traveled to Avery Middle to take on the Panthers. Both teams emerged victorious with the boys winning 60-47  with Asa Peterson adding 23 points while Luke Burleson tipped in 19.

Mitchell falls to Mount Airy ending season

Mitchell advances in playoffs, heads to Mt. Airy

Macie Greene MNJ Intern On Nov. 3 the Mitchell High Mountaineers played what is most likely going to be their last home game of the season. Looking forward to the first playoff game the Mountaineers went in with what senior receiver Dillon Barnett described as a “winning mentality”.

Mountaineers head to playoffs on Friday night

The 2023 regular season came to a close on Friday night in Ledger with the Mitchell Mountaineers collecting their eighth win of the year. Coach Travise Pitman, now in his 10th year as the head coach, has led the Mountaineers to at least eight wins per year during his tenure at the helm at Mitchell.

Big win caps senior night for Mitchell

Macie Greene - MNJ Intern After a win against the Rosman Tigers on Oct. 20, the Mitchell High School Mountaineers were ready to take on the Avery Vikings on Friday night, Oct. 27, as they honored their senior players.

Lady Mountaineers finish season, 2-18

Marcie Green - MJN Intern The Mitchell Mountaineer volleyball team has had a rough season due to injuries and sickness. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the Lady Mountaineers ended their season 2-18 overall. While it wasn’t the outcome they hoped for, it is the harsh reality that the seniors will remember.

Mountaineers defeat Tigers

Mountaineer football got back on the winning track Friday night as the Mountaineers traveled to Rosman and came away with a 41-14 victory. After the Heritage game, there could easily have been a letdown with how this team reacted to an emotional loss.
