The Mitchell Mountaineer wrestling team had a good week last week, going 6-2 for the week. The Mountaineers started the week with a good showing at the McDowell Quad, taking on host McDowell, AC Reynolds, and Erwin High School. They began the night with a solid win over AC Reynolds 48-30, followed by another strong showing against Erwin 61-18. The hopes for a sweep were dashed by host McDowell in the evening’s final match, as the host Titans squeaked by the Mountaineers 39-34.
Saturday the Mountaineers headed to the Alleghany Duals in Sparta. The team finished 4-1 on the day, and 5th overall out of 12 teams.
The day started poorly for the Mountaineers, as they dropped their opening match 66-15 to host Alleghany. Mitchell rebounded and reeled off four consecutive wins over Fort Chiswell, VA 54-30, East Surry 52-28, Martinsville, VA 66-18 and John Paul II Catholic School 60-17.
The wins boosted the Mountaineers to 6-5 on the season.
The team is being led by strong performances from several seniors including DJ Pugh (8-6), Austin Styles (12-6), Jayden Burleson (13-7), and Camron Cook (15-2). The Mountaineers will kick off Western Highland Conference action at home Tuesday, Dec. 19 as they host Owen and Draughn High School.
