Mountaineers face the Cougars in three games

The Mitchell High School Mountaineers faced the Mountain Heritage Cougars on Friday night, Jan. 9,  with teams competing across three games.

The JV boys opened the night with a close 38-30 win over Heritage. The Mountaineers stayed composed throughout the game and used strong defense late to hold off the Cougars and secure the victory.

In varsity girls’ action, Mitchell fell 53-23. Freshman Joci McKinney led the Mountaineers in scoring and provided a spark on offense.

McKinney and Olivia Thacker also led the team in rebounds, battling inside against a physical Heritage team.

The varsity boys closed the night with a 72-52 loss to Heritage. Mitchell came out strong and kept the game competitive early, with the contest going back and forth in the opening minutes. Heritage was able to pull ahead as the game progressed, but the Mountaineers continued to compete through the final buzzer.

Mitchell will look to build on these performances as the season continues.
