From turf to hardwood, players hit the court
The Mitchell Mountaineers traveled to Weaverville for their basketball season opener against North Buncombe High School.
The junior varsity girls opened their season with a loss to North Buncombe in overtime. The junior varsity boys fell by a score of 50-61 with AJ Mackey scoring 16, Riley Silvers with 11, and Kaden Buchanan contributing 8.
North Buncombe defeated the Lady Mountaineers with a score of 39 to 55 in the season opener.
The varsity boys had a strong showing for their first game of the season taking the 2-1 Black Hawks into overtime and winning with a score of 86-79. Senior Connor Warren had 20 points and junior Fernando Flores chipped in 20 of his own with senior Dillon Barnett adding 18 to propel the Mountaineers to a win in their season debut.
Harris Middle School
The Harris Middle Blue Devil basketball hosted the Bulldogs from Bowman Middle on Friday, Dec. 1. The girls finished with a score of 44-26 despite rallying in the second half. Regan Woodlief scored 8 points while Cayma Farley added 8 of her own.
The boys game was exciting and came down to the final seconds, but the Blue Devils pulled away to remain undefeated through the first half of the season. The final score was 44-41 with Asa Peterson being the high scorer with 20 points and Eli Snyder adding 12.
On Monday, Nov. 27, Harris Middle School’s boys and girls teams upset the undefeated Madison Middle School Patriots in both games by 1 point.
The girls won by a score of 25-24 with Regan Woodlief putting up 12 of those points, and Cayma Farley and Lily Glenn adding 4 points each.
The boys won by a score of 43-42 with Eli Snyder hitting the buzzer beater to give the Patriots their first loss of the season.
The Devils were led by Asa Peterson with 20 points, Snyder adding 15, and Luke Burleson contributing the final 7.
The girls team improves to 4-2 in the conference while the boys team remains undefeated.
