On Nov. 3 the Mitchell High Mountaineers played what is most likely going to be their last home game of the season.

Looking forward to the first playoff game the Mountaineers went in with what senior receiver Dillon Barnett described as a “winning mentality”.

Starting off strong, the senior Mountaineer captains Chase Duncan, Dillon Barnett, Camron Cook, and Rylan Cooper got the ball by the difference of East Wilkes’ coin toss victory.

Senior receiver Kaden Phillips caught the first kick return of the game and ran for 25 yards to jump start what fans could see was going to be a good game.

To start a good night off right senior running back Rylan Cooper ran for a seven-yard touchdown making it the first touchdown of the game.

Kicking off to East Wilkes Chris Wences kicked the ball right into the Cardinals arms but they fumbled the ball and Junior linebacker Andrew Carpenter recovered the ball to secure the possession for the Mountaineers. Concluding the first quarter senior running back Rylan Cooper had another touchdown to bring the score to 13-0 going into the second quarter.

The Cardinals came back with a touchdown in the first two minutes of the second quarter. Mountaineer fans didn’t have to worry for long, as senior Chase Duncan scored yet another Mountaineer touchdown to conclude the first half.

Coming back strong into the third quarter Rylan Cooper had yet another touchdown followed by an extra point made by Chris Wences.

Wanting to end their last home game of the season on a good win, junior quarterback Caleb Cook ran the ball 1 yard for the recurring theme of the game, a Mountaineer touchdown. Not ready to give up just yet, the Cardinals scored the last touchdown of the game with a 55-yard run and a completed a two-point conversion ending their season, right there.

As the Mountaineers celebrated their victory the Cardinal’s season ended in Ledge. The Mountaineers will take on the Mount Airy Granite Bears in Mount Airy for what will be the toughest game of the season.
