FOOTBALL: Mitchell's season ends at Draughn

The season is over for the Mitchell High varsity football team after a 35-10 loss at Draughn on Friday, Nov. 11 in the second round of the 1A state playoffs. The Mountaineers end the season 8-4 overall. The team won its first-round game over South Davidson in Ledger.

FOOTBALL: Mitchell opens playoffs with home rout

Mitchell advanced to the second round of the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs after overpowering South Davidson 72-21 in Ledger in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 4. Mitchell (8-3) advances to play at Draughn— a familiar Western Highlands Conference foe.

VOLLEYBALL: Bethel wins state championship

The Bethel Christian Academy varsity volleyball team on Saturday, Oct. 29 won the North Carolina Christian School Athletic Association Division 4 private school state championship in Monroe. T he team beat Victory Christian in five sets to secure the hardware.

FOOTBALL: Mitchell closes regular season with rout of Avery

The Mitchell High varsity football team started fast and never looked back in a 49-11 rout at Avery High on Friday, Oct. 28 in the regular season finale. The Mountaineers close the regular season 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the Western Highlands Conference.

Mayland joins NJCAA, will initially offer golf, cross country

There’s a new mascot in town. Mayland Community College is now officially home to the Mayland Highlanders athletics program. MCC this past week announced its approved membership with the National Junior College Athletic Association— the governing body of community college sports.

Mountaineers tame Tigers

The Mitchell High varsity football team on Friday, Oct. 21 dismantled conference foe Rosman 56-6 on Senior Night in Ledger. On a very cold night in Ledger, the Mountaineers (6-3, 4-1) came out hot. Senior Gage Young returned the opening kickoff for an 84-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.

Pair of MHS female golfers standing out

Mitchell High sophomore Ivy Young was named Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year for the 2022 fall season of girls’ golf. Young collected four individual victories in Western Highlands Conference matches during the season.

FOOTBALL: Draughn too much for Mitchell

The Draughn High varsity football team continued its strong season and pushed its winning streak to four games with a 56-21 home win over Mitchell on Thursday, Sept. 29 in a game moved up one day due to Hurricane Ian.
