Mitchell High sophomore Ivy Young was named Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year for the 2022 fall season of girls’ golf.

Young collected four individual victories in Western Highlands Conference matches during the season. Her best nine-hole score was a one over 37 at Grassy Creek Golf and Country Club and her best 18-hole score was a 78 at Black Mountain Golf Course.

Her best five-match scoring average was 38.6 which led the conference. Young finished second in the conference tournament at Black Mountain earlier this month.

Young will continue play in the 1A/2A West Regionals at Mimosa Golf and Country Club in Morganton on Oct. 18.

Meanwhile, freshman Maddie Horney completed her first year of competitive golf at Mitchell.

She improved throughout the season and posted her season-best nine-hole score of 56 at Sugar Mountain Golf Course.

Horney continues to work on her game and looks forward to playing again next year.
