The Mitchell High varsity football team on Friday, Oct. 21 dismantled conference foe Rosman 56-6 on Senior Night in Ledger.

On a very cold night in Ledger, the Mountaineers (6-3, 4-1) came out hot.

Senior Gage Young returned the opening kickoff for an 84-yard touchdown to make it 7-0. Giarrusso also added two rushing touchdowns to make it 21-0.

Rosman (0-10, 0-6) fired back when senior Carson Lyday ran it into the endzone making it 21-6 after an unsuccessful 2-point try.

Mitchell continued its efforts through the first when Young took a handoff for 30 yards to score once more. The Mountaineers led 28-6 by the end of the opening quarter.

The Tigers were stopped play after play and were unable to come back against the Mountaineers. Rosman’s Smith carried but fumbled the ball when it was recovered by Mitchell senior Angel Castaneda at Rosman’s 16-yard line.

Young took another handoff for 30 yards to the house, then senior quarterback Ty Turbyfill made a pass to Hollifield for a 31-yard touchdown late in the second.

Mitchell led 42-6 at the half.

Rosman’s Kreed Smith threw a pass for Colton Dodson that was intercepted by Mitchell’s Dayshawn Orr.

The Mountaineers wrapped it up for the night as junior Marley McCourry notched two touchdowns for 19 yards combined. They defeated the Tigers by a final score of 56-6.

Turbyfill was 3-for-3 in passes for 2 touchdowns and 73 yards total. Mitchell had 246  yards rushing and 73 through the air. Junior Rylan Cooper led the team in tackles with 6, including 2 for a loss.
