Mitchell High School senior Ethan Willis on Thursday, Feb. 10 made his college plans official by signing a letter of intent to play college baseball at Camp Community College in Virginia. Willis, a multi-sport athlete, also played football and basketball at Mitchell.

Tarboro takes title behind running game

Mitchell High’s bid for its first football state football title was denied on Saturday, Dec. 11 by Tarboro, which beat the Mountaineers 28-7 in the 1A State Championship played at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. The Vikings (14-1) win the state for the second consecutive season.

BEST IN THE WEST

For the second time in school history, the Mitchell High varsity football team is headed to the State Championship. The Mountaineers (13-2) punched their ticket to the biggest stage by ousting visiting Robbinsville 34-21 on Friday, Dec. 3 in front of a large, raucous crowd in Ledger.

Harris girls, boys roll Rosman

The Harris Middle girls’ basketball team took care of visiting Rosman 49-23 on Thursday, Nov. 18 to improve to 1-1.  The Blue Devils lost to Madison in the season opener.  Emma Cook led the way for Harris in the rout of Rosman with a team-high 27 points. She made 11 of 15 free throws.

Mountaineers are conference champs

Congratulations to the 2021 Mitchell Mountaineers. They are undefeated in conference play for the second season in a row and the 2021 Western Highlands Conference Champions. In addition to winning the conference championship, the Mountaineers also won the Border Battle game against Avery.

Mountaineers roll over Cougars

The Mitchell Mountaineers traveled to Burnsville Friday night to take on Mtn. Heritage on a near perfect weather night for high school football in mid-October. The Mountaineers last win in Burnsville was a 31-28 victory in 2011.
