Holiday events begin this weekend around county

SPRUCE PINE – The Mountain Christmas Trail of Lights and Holiday Events begins in Mitchell County Saturday, Nov. 30, with events in both Spruce Pine and Bakersville.

Tountasakis honored by North Shore Animal League at NYC gala

NEW YORK – The North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, celebrated its 75th year of lifesaving work at its annual “Get Your Rescue On” Gala Friday, Nov. 15, at Pier 60 at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.

Graduation requirements get tweak

LEDGER – There are minor changes on the docket for graduation requirements in Mitchell County Schools. Career Technical Education Director Kim Hodshon discussed the changes Thursday, Nov. 21, during the regular meeting of the Mitchell County Board of Education.

‘Miss High Country’ pageant raises nearly $2K for Shop With a Cop

SPRUCE PINE – The Miss High Country Fundraiser Pageant was a day of fun and glamour to raise money for the Mitchell County Shop With a Cop program.  The pageant took place Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Robin Austin Memorial Center at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

MITCHELL DISMANTLES POLK

LEDGER – Mitchell High School’s varsity football team is moving on to the next round of the 1AA state playoffs.  The No. 2-seeded Mountaineers (11-1) rolled to a 28-0 win over visiting No.7-seeded Polk County (9-4) Friday, Nov. 22, in their playoff opener after enjoying a first-round bye.
