BAKERSVILLE – Just more than a week after the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners voted to not re-appoint Kathy Young as County Manager, an Interim County Manager is in place.

The board, at a special called meeting Tuesday, Dec. 10, unanimously approved former County Manager and current mayor of Bakersville Charles “Chuck” Vines as the Interim County Manager.

The board voted to replace Young Monday, Dec. 2, during its regular monthly meeting.

Vines served as County Manager before Young took over the position in 2016.

Commissioner Danny Burleson was serving as acting County Manager prior to Vines’ approval as interim.

Burleson thanked the board and the county staff for making the transition smooth.

“We have a bunch of good county employees,” Burleson said. “Even though we had a little disruption, everyone’s carried on. Everything’s gone just as smooth as it can.”

In addition to naming Vines interim County Manager, the board also unanimously approved former Clerk to the Board Crystal Young as Interim Clerk to the Board and Anne Castro as Interim Human Resources Director.

Board Chair Jacob Willis, Vice Chair Matthew “Vern” Grindstaff and Commissioner Steve Pitman thanked Vines, Crystal Young and Castro for their willingness to step in.

“Thank you all for being willing to help us,” Willis said. “We have amazing employees.”
