COVID 19 cases increase in Mitchell County

SPRUCE PINE – “Nothing has changed with COVID-19,” Director of Toe River Health District Diane Creek said on Wednesday, June 17.   Creek acknowledged many people are feeling as if the coronavirus pandemic has lessened in severity, but warned the virus has not disappeared.

Restaurant expands as business grows

GRASSY CREEK – Claudia y Los 4 Mariachis is getting a new home. The Mexican restaurant is moving to 12145 Highway 226, the former location of Boonie’s Pizza Company, in the Spruce Pine Commons Shopping Center.

SPRUCE PINE – The Spruce Pine Town Council heard multiple public comments from concerned citizens Monday, June 8, about the Brad Ragan pool and public restrooms at its regular session.

BOE talks plans for fall classes

Dear Denise: I am a 74-year old woman. I recently lost my husband and moved here to live near my daughter. I miss having friends. My daughter has encouraged me to get out to senior events and to meet people. But why should I? At my age, people die.

Carpenter, Wiseman receive scholarships

Mitchell County Retired School Personnel has awarded two scholarships to local seniors.  Emma Carpenter was awarded the Lloyd and Mildred Bryson Scholarship, which is given to a student who plans to become a teacher, in the amount of $1,500.
