GRASSY CREEK – Vic’s Place, a miniature golf course, is set to open this coming Father’s Day weekend in Spruce Pine.

Vic’s Place owner Kim Oberhammer said she wanted to bring something new and special to Spruce Pine for some time, but after a visit to Myrtle Beach, she landed on the idea for a miniature golf course.

“I’m so tired of hearing people say that there’s nothing to do in this town for kids or for anybody,” she said. “I love this town and I want it to succeed, so I decided to put my money where my mouth is and here we are with a mini golf course.”

The course has 18 holes, nine of which are wheelchair accessible. However, it does not look like a “classic” miniature golf course, Oberhammer noted.

“We don’t have any fake volcanoes or neon blue water like you see at Myrtle Beach,” she said. “We wanted it to look super natural and blend in with the land and the trees.”

The course is named in honor of both Oberhammer’s late father and grandfather, both named Victor Oberhammer. She said her grandfather was a golf professional for more than 50 years in Scarsdale, NY and was a big inspiration for the business.

“This is an ode to both of them, really, because I loved both of them so much,” she said.

There is also a clubhouse, decorated with a 1970s flair, where they will serve shaved ice. Oberhammer said they have 15 standard flavors, including blue raspberry and orange creamsicle, and they will have rotating specials each week.

While the course will open Friday, June 19, there will be a special Father’s Day celebration on Sunday, June 21. Red Wolff Kitchen food truck will be there at noon and fathers with their families play free.

The course is located at 67 Meadow View Road off Highway 226 and will be open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday through Monday. The cost for an adult is $8; and $4 for children under 12 accompanied by a paid adult.
