New editor joins the Mitchell News-Journal

The Mitchell News-Journal welcomed new editor Mariel Williams to its staff last week.  Williams is an experienced journalist with a diverse background. Growing up in Yancey County, William’s journalism aspirations began with a desire to write as a child.

Sarah Atkins mnjreporter@gmail.com As excitement surrounding the opening of the new school building in Ledger reaches its peak, many are beginning to wonder what comes next. As it turns out, a new student athletic complex will break ground on June 17.

Budget hearings set

Mitchell County residents will have an opportunity to comment on the county’s proposed 2024-25 fiscal budget on Monday, June 3. The board of county commissioners will hear comments from the public relating to the proposed budget at 6:30 p.m.

Sibelco receives conservation award

ibelco has received the Wildlife Habitat Council’s (WHC) Conservation Silver Certification® for its Crystal Plant site in Spruce Pine. This certification recognizes Sibelco’s exceptional conservation efforts and wildlife programs.

Brad Ragan Park reopens

The newly renovated Brad Ragan Park in Spruce Pine officially reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a host of community activities. Parks and Recreation Director Michael Wood outlined the extensive updates made to the park, emphasizing the significant improvements.

Piedmont Natural Gas schedules maintenance

Piedmont Natural Gas is conducting routine infrastructure maintenance near 2490 US-19E in Spruce Pine. The scheduled work will take place on three separate occasions in May and June, weather permitting. Upcoming maintenance dates include: June 4–12 (weekdays only) and June 20-27.

Mitchell-McDowell boundary line changes

Madison Smith msmith219426@gmail.com A recent study on the Mitchell-McDowell boundary line was conducted by the state in February. Since its inception in 1861, Mitchell County’s boundary line has not changed but has rather been charted more accurately as new technologies have been invented.
