The Board of Education of Mitchell County Schools discussed the mundane details of kids starting classes again at its recent meeting.
Superintendent Chad Calhoun noted that there are some small changes since last year for students settling into their fall school routine, such as changes to bus numbers after the district acquired two new buses.
Calhoun noted that the North Carolina Department of Transportation is re-opening Mine Creek Road, but there are still problems with the roadways that will affect bus routes. A number of the roads usually used by school buses were damaged or washed away during Hurricane Helene (downgraded to a tropical storm after slowing down over land).
“There’s still roads being worked on; there’s still issues,” Calhoun said.
However, the superintendent said that the district’s own repairs have gone well.
“The schools seem to be in great shape and ready to go,” he said.
