SBI Investigating shooting in Spruce Pine

A man was injured by a self-inflicted gun shot wound on Friday while SBI agents were serving an arrest warrant.
According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the incident occurred while Special Agents were serving an arrest warrant near 12021 NC Highway 226 in Spruce Pine.
A team of Special Agents, in cooperation with Spruce Pine Police Department, was serving an arrest warrant on a subject charged with two counts of statutory sex offense with a child 15 years or younger and one count of statutory rape of a child 15 years or younger.
When approached by the special agents, the suspect drew a concealed weapon and sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the SBI. The discharged round also struck an SBI Special Agent in his protective vest.
The suspect is identified as Timothy Alan Hoilman, age 52.
SBI agents rendered medical aid and secured the scene. Hoilman was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Spruce Pine Police Department responded to the scene and assisted.
