Mitchell girls roll on to 12-0 record

LEDGER — The Mitchell High varsity girls’ basketball team kept its perfect season intact with a pair of double-digit wins this past week. 

The Mountaineers moved to 12-0 on the season, including 9-0 in Western Highlands Conference play, by winning 73-39 at Madison on Tuesday, Feb. 9 and beating visiting Polk 62-41 on Friday, Feb. 12. 

Mitchell roared out to an 18-4 lead in the first quarter against Madison and never looked back, leading by double digits for the rest of the game. 

Senior Marley Cloer poured in 17 points to lead Mitchell. She went 3-for-7 from 3-point range and was 7-for-13 from the field. 

Seniors Paige Johnson and Jill Pittman scored a combined 24 points and sophomore Reagan Sparks tallied 11 points of her own. 

Sparks also led the team with eight rebounds while Cloer and senior Carissa Blevins chipped in six boards each. 

The Mountaineers kept the positive momentum going against Polk, jumping out to a 15-7 lead after the opening quarter and controlling the game the rest of the way. 

Pittman powered Mitchell with a team-high 14 points and 10 assists. Cloer scored 13 points and Johnson added 11. 

The Mountaineers wrapped up the regular season on Monday, Feb. 15 at Avery. Results were not available at press time. 

The Western Highlands Conference tournament was canceled to allow for the necessary makeup games caused by COVID-19 concerns throughout the season. 

Mitchell will now wait to see how the state playoff brackets shape up later this month. Follow the News-Journal for updates on seeding and matchups. 

Boys’ basketball

The Mitchell boys’ basketball team edged Madison 58-57 on the road in overtime on Tuesday, Feb. 9 to move to 6-5 on the season. 

The Mountaineers trailed Madison 36-28 at the beginning of the fourth quarter but the team rallied to outscore the Patriots 22-14 in the final frame to force overtime. 

In the extra period, Mitchell outscored the hosts 8-7 to earn the win. 

Senior Caius Arrington went 13-for-20 from the field and scored a game-high 32 points to complement his 10 rebounds and four steals. 

Senior Jeremy Sparks registered a team-high six assists and Tim Hollifield scored nine points. 

The Mitchell boys were scheduled to play at home against Polk on Friday, Feb. 12 but the game was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns within the Polk boys’ program. 

The team played on Monday, Feb. 15 at Avery. Results were not available at press time. The varsity boys are scheduled to close the regular season with a makeup game at home against Polk on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.
