Mitchell girls move to 10-0 with pair of wins

LEDGER — The Mitchell High varsity girls’ basketball team just keeps on rolling. 

The Mountaineers won a pair of home games this past week over Owen and Mountain Heritage to improve to 10-0. 

Eight of the team’s 10 wins have come by double digits. The only team to bring the final margin to single digits has been Mountain Heritage, which has done it twice. 

Mitchell started the week with a 71-28 thrashing of Owen on Wednesday, Feb. 3. 

The Mountaineers stormed out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter and extended the lead by outscoring the visitors 19-7 in the second quarter. 

Mitchell outscored Owen 35-16 in the second half to cruise to the win. 

The Mountaineers shot 37.5 percent from the field while holding Owen to just 20.5 percent. 

Junior guard Annali Silver paced the Mountaineers with a team-high 15 points. All of her field goals were 3-pointers and she was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. 

Junior Savannah Banks chipped in 12 points and senior Paige Johnson scored nine. Banks also pulled down a team-high six rebounds, all on the offensive side of the floor. 

The Mountaineers kept the positive momentum flowing by downing rival Mountain Heritage 57-50 on Thursday, Feb. 4. 

Johnson led the team with 16 points and senior guard Jill Pittman added 11 points to go along with her team-best four assists. 

Junior Chandra Jenkins and sophomore Reagan Sparks tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each. 

The Mountaineers played at Madison on Tuesday, Feb. 9 but results were not available at press time. 

Mitchell wraps up the regular season with a home game against Polk on Friday, Feb. 12 and a road game at Avery on Monday, Feb. 15.
