LEDGER — The Mitchell High School varsity girls’ basketball team continued its perfect start to the season with two blowout wins over Polk and Avery this past week.
The Mountaineers (8-0) first routed Polk 57-34 on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Mitchell trailed Polk 12-10 after one quarter but surged ahead by outscoring the hosts 22-5 in the second quarter.
Mitchell extended its double-digit halftime lead by outscoring the Wolverines 18-4 in the third quarter.
Senior Marley Cloer powered the Mountaineers against Polk with a team-high 17 points while senior Paige Johnson chipped in nine points and added a team-leading six assists.
Senior Jill Pittman finished with eight points.
Mitchell closed the week with a 65-33 thrashing of visiting Avery on Friday, Jan. 29.
The Mountaineers led 13-7 after one quarter and extended the lead to 33-17 at halftime. Mitchell outscored the Vikings 32-16 in the second half.
Johnson led the way with 15 points while Pittman registered a team-high seven assists.
Sophomore Reagan Sparks, Pittman and Cloer scored nine points each and junior Chandra Jenkins pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, including six on the offensive side.
Mitchell hosted Owen on Tuesday, Feb. 2 but results were not available at press time. The Mountaineers host rival Mountain Heritage on Friday, Feb. 5 before heading to Madison on Tuesday, Feb, 9.
Mitchell closes the regular season with a home game against Polk (Feb. 12) and a road game at Avery (Feb. 15).
