Mitchell boys win fourth straight, move to 4-4

LEDGER — The Mitchell High School varsity boys’ basketball team is picking up steam. 

After starting the season 0-4, the Mountaineers have now ripped off four straight wins to move to 4-4. 

Mitchell kept its winning streak alive with a pair of wins over Polk and Avery this past week. 

The Mountaineers started the week by winning 76-67 at Polk on Tuesday, Jan. 26. 

Mitchell started strong against the Wolverines, jumping out to a 22-9 lead in the first quarter. 

The Mountaineers extended their lead to 45-25 at halftime and held off a strong second half comeback by the hosts. 

Mitchell was fueled by a team-high 24 points from Caius Arrington, who also pulled down a team-leading 16 rebounds and led the team with eight assists. 

Seniors Jeremy Sparks and Ty Pitman combined for 21 points in the win.

Mitchell kept the positive momentum going with a 78-53 win over visiting Avery on Friday, Jan. 29. 

Mitchell started fast again, earning a 16-4 lead after one quarter. 

The Mountaineers outscored the Vikings in all three of the following quarters to cruise to the win. 

Arrington led the way again with 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while Pitman and Tim Hollifield added 13 points each. 

Cole Sparks also registered double-digit scoring totals with 10 points. 

Mitchell hosted Owen on Tuesday, Feb. 2 but results were not available at press time. The Mountaineers host Mountain Heritage on Friday, Feb. 5 before heading to Madison for a road conference test on Tuesday, Feb. 9.
