JEFF HARDING After two years on the board, Commissioner Jeff Harding wants to continue serving the citizens of the county he loves. “I have a true heart for Mitchell County and I want to see it succeed and do well,” he said.

Shoppers, vendors enjoy Fall Festival

Fall was in the air and inside the Cross Street Commerce Center on Saturday, Oct. 10 during the Spruce Pine Fall Festival.

BAKERSVILLE — As early voting begins across the state this week, Director of the Mitchell County Board of Elections Roycene Jones wants Mitchell County residents to know what to expect when they go to cast their ballot.

BAKERSVILLE — Early voting in Mitchell County opens Thursday, Oct. 15 and continues through Saturday, Oct. 31.  Voters can cast their early ballots at the Spruce Pine Fire Department or the Mitchell County Board of Elections Office in Bakersville.  Both locations will be open on weekdays from 8 a.
The “available” sign at the old Bojangles building in Spruce Pine near Walmart is finally coming down. Puerto Nuevo Mexican and Seafood Restaurant will soon call the building home. The owners plan to remodel the building. A grand opening date will be announced at a later time.

New Mexican restaurant coming soon to former Bojangles building

SPRUCE PINE — A new Mexican restaurant will soon make its way to Mitchell County.  Puerto Nuevo Mexican and Seafood Restaurant is coming to the building that used to house Bojangles near Walmart directly off U.S. Highway 226 South.

Locals enjoy first Mountaineer Festival

People packed the streets of downtown Bakersville and the Creekwalk on Saturday, Oct. 3 for the first North Carolina Mountaineer Festival.

Absentee ballot requests rising during pandemic

BAKERSVILLE — Requests for absentee ballots in Mitchell County have increased significantly this year compared to previous election cycles. Director of the Mitchell County Board of Elections Roycene Jones said the county has received 1,130 absentee ballots requests so far.
