Local Cub Scouts plant trees in Yancey

BURNSVILLE — Local Cub Scouts from the Spruce Pine Pack 505 and Burnsville Pack 502 worked hard on Saturday, Nov. 14 to plant trees at Cane River Park in Yancey County.

The park, which was seriously damaged due to flooding last year, now has a dozen new shade trees around the baseball fields.

Cub Scout Louise D’Elia from Pack 505 said it was important for them to plant the trees for the local wildlife and for the community.

“As Cub Scouts, it’s important that we help the community and the animals,” Louise said. “The trees we planted will help with shade at the baseball fields for the people and the animals.”

Louise and her fellow scouts Kaylee Morgan, Charlie D’Elia, Ezra McLott and Cozy Taylor all agreed it was important to give back to the community and said they had a great time planting trees with the Pack 502.

“It was fun to plant the trees with each other and new friends,” Louise said.

Jeff Harding, Mitchell County Commissioner and owner of Harding’s Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance, donated the trees to the scouts.

Harding, a former Eagle Scout, said the Boy Scouts of America has a special place in his heart.

“Being a Boy Scout taught me a lot,” Harding said. “I just thought it was a good cause that we could help out with easily and we always want to sow seeds into the community when we can.”
