Peoples sold

SPRUCE PINE – Occupying a space on Oak Avenue in Spruce Pine, Peoples Furniture has anchored the upper street shopping district for more than 70 years.  Last week the business was sold.

Spruce Pine streets were lined with cars and people on Saturday night for the annual Halloween Main Street Trick -or -Treating.

Mitchell Transit adds Pine Line Shuttle

There’s a new transportation route coming to Mitchell County. Beginning Nov. 1, Mitchell County Public Transit will operate a fixed route in Sprue Pine. The first pick up is slated for 6 a.m. “We see people walking on Hwy 226 to Walmart on a regular basis,” said MCPT Director Sheila Blalock.

Mountaineers roll over Cougars

The Mitchell Mountaineers traveled to Burnsville Friday night to take on Mtn. Heritage on a near perfect weather night for high school football in mid-October. The Mountaineers last win in Burnsville was a 31-28 victory in 2011.

House offers hope for a new life

Festival funds community projects

Hosted by the Spruce Pine Rotary Club, the annual BBQ and Bluegrass Festival is a major fundraiser for the local Rotary club. This year’s event will net somewhere near $5,000 said Rotary Club of Spruce Pine President Marvin Walker. And those dollars will impact people in Mitchell County and beyond.

People came to the 9th Annual Spruce Pine BBQ and Bluegrass Festival for a variety of reasons Saturday morning. Crafters came hoping to sell their wares on a cool autumn day. Food trucks came to delight the tastebuds of the young and old with homemade lemonade, ice cream and barbecue.

Apple Butter Festival canceled amid pandemic

For a second straight year, the annual Apple Butter Festival is canceled amid the ongoing pandemic. The event, which is organized by the Mitchell County Historical Society, was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9 on the Bakersville Creek Walk.
