Glider crashes near Little Switzerland

A pilot survived a crash with minor injuries in the Little Switzerland area recently. The aircraft was a small glider that had been towed up into the air by another aircraft.

Private property debris removal stalled

Counties across Western North Carolina are struggling to get approval to remove debris from private property more than a year after Hurricane Helene (downgraded to a tropical storm after slowing down over land), according to a report at a recent Mitchell County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Quartz workers split on ousting union

On Oct. 14, 2025, union workers at The Quartz Corp in Spruce Pine filed a petition to decertify the United Mine Workers Local 0140 as their bargaining representative.

Spruce Pine receives $4 million for water infrastructure upgrade

Two Republicans seek clerk of court seat

Both candidates for the position of Mitchell County Clerk of Court spoke at the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce candidate forum Thursday. Shana Buchanan and David Wheeler are both running in the Republican primary election Tuesday. In her opening statement, Buchanan highlighted her experience.
