UPDATE: Due to the impending weather from Hurricane Delta, Remember When Day has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Parkway Fairgrounds on Grassy Creek in Spruce Pine.
SPRUCE PINE — Remember When Day returns for its second year on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Parkway Fairgrounds in Grassy Creek, on the hill behind Spruce Pine Chevy.
The event, which is put on by the Mitchell County Firefighters Association, is dedicated to preserving the local heritage and honoring local heroes.
Activities will include antique farm equipment demonstrations, an exhibit of antique tractors and equipment, antique car and truck displays, demonstrations of emergency procedures and a fire truck exhibit.
Several local craft and retail vendors will also offer their goods for sale during the day.
Kids can enjoy a tractor train and mini-firefighter challenge and live music and festival food will be on tap all day.
The free event is a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting the Mitchell County Firefighters Association, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting fire departments in Mitchell County.
Most of the work the association does is funded by donations within Mitchell County and beyond.
The event will run with several COVID-19 precautions in place including the spacing of vendors, encouragement of social distancing for attendees and conveniently-placed handwashing stations.
Face coverings are encouraged but not required.
Mitchell County Fire Association Vice President Tim Renfro said the event is a chance for the organization to interact with the community.
“We’re going to have a lot of different stuff than what we had last year,” Renfro said. “Hopefully, it’ll be a good weather day and we can get out and do some fun stuff and show the community what we do. We couldn’t do what we do without the people of Mitchell County.”
