BAKERSVILLE – Veronica Pitman has retired from teaching after more than 30 years in a classroom, and colleagues, friends, family members, and current and former students bid her farewell Thursday, May 21, in a drive-by retirement ceremony at Bowman Middle School.
Pitman started with Mitchell County Schools in 1987 as a special education assistant at Bowman and Mitchell High. She took a year off before going to work as an assistant at Gouge Elementary.
She enrolled at Mayland Community College in 2001 and later finished her degree in K-6 education at Lees-McRae.
Her first teaching job was at Gouge, where she taught third, fourth and fifth grades.
She then received a Master of Education degree with an emphasis in science grades for six through nine.
She has taught eighth-grade science at Bowman for the past several years and is also certified in middle school social studies.
