Decorative planters vandalized, Bakersville resident says

BAKERSVILLE — Decorative planters on the bridge along Highway 226 in Bakersville were vandalized Wednesday, July 8, said Germaine Galjour of Bakersville.

Several days before that, hanging baskets placed in the gazebo at Cane Creek Park were stolen, Galjour added.

Galjour said the floral arrangements are courtesy of Bakersville’s unofficial volunteer garden club.

“The garden club is distressed by these lawless acts which delayed their efforts to bring a joyful view to residents and visitors alike,” Galjour said.

Galjour said flowers were ripped from the planters, leaving empty planters and spilled soil behind.

Members of the volunteer garden club plan to erect new displays and Galjour said the group has alerted local law enforcement to keep watch over the new planters.

“We hope this announcement will bring about a change in the behavior of those responsible for the thefts, damage and destruction,” Galjour said. “These vandals have broken the law and disrespected Bakersville.”
