BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mitchell loses at Madison, gets win over Polk

LEDGER – The Mitchell High School varsity boys’ basketball team split its two games this past week to move its record to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the Western Highlands Conference. 

The Mountaineers lost 73-66 at Madison Tuesday, Jan. 14, but responded Friday, Jan. 17, with a 49-31 home win over Polk. 

Senior Zeus Ponder led Mitchell in scoring and rebounds against Madison, registering a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Caius Peterson chipped in 17 points and senior Tyler McKinney added 10 points. 

Mitchell outscored Polk in every quarter, including a 13-4 run in the second quarter that gave the Mountaineers a 21-9 lead at halftime. 

Peterson and Ponder combined for 30 points and Peterson pulled down a team-high 17 rebounds and posted four steals. 

Mitchell hosted Avery Tuesday, Jan. 21. Results were not available at press time. 

The Mountaineers are back in action Thursday, Jan. 23, against Crest in Shelby and return home Friday, Jan. 24, to clash with Owen.
