TOWN OF SPRUCE PINE: Phillips gives update about downtown businesses

SPRUCE PINE – Some businesses in downtown Spruce Pine will soon be going through changes.

Spruce Pine Main Street Executive Director Libby Phillips reported about downtown businesses Tuesday, Feb. 11, during the regular meeting of the Spruce Pine Town Council.

Phillips said the remodel of the former Mayland Printing building should be finished soon. One side of the building is already in use by Tribe Fitness, which offers spin classes, group exercise opportunities and activities for children. Tribe Fitness is planning to remodel and expand into the other side of the building so that it can further expand its spin classes, which have been popular since the business opened.

“That business is blowing it out of the water,” Phillips said.

Phillips continued her report by saying Keen Outdoors plans to move from its current location on Upper Street next to Southwest Trading Company. The business will move across the street into the building that used to house River’s Edge Outfitters.

The move will give Keen Outdoors more retail space.

Capone’s Italian American Bar and Grill, which is currently open on Lower Street in the old Knife and Fork building, will soon be on the move, Phillips added. The lease on the building ends in April, and Capone’s ownership has stated their plans to find a new location at that time.

Phillips closed her report by saying the Tokyo building on Upper Street is under contract by an investor, and The Grove Church plans to remodel a portion of the upper level of the Bomar building and move its church to that larger space.

“They’ve got some pretty good remodeling plans,” Phillips said.
