Bakersville, Little Switzerland and Spruce Pine are three of the “coolest” mountain small towns near Asheville, says a top 40 list recently compiled by RomanticAsheville.com Travel Guide.

The list highlights small towns in Western North Carolina that offer unique historic sights, friendly shops, art galleries and other quirky finds.

“Each town has its own personality and many things to do surrounding the Asheville area,” the list introduction reads.

Some larger towns like Hendersonville, Brevard and Bryson City made the list. The listings for Mitchell County’s trio of smaller representatives encourage visitors to come to the area by highlighting some local attractions.

Bakersville’s listing encourages people to visit the local galleries and studios and raises awareness for the annual Rhododendron Festival and the nearby Penland School of Craft. The list touts Spruce Pine’s downtown area and mentions the Toe River Arts Gallery and the local festivals and gem mining opportunities. The list highlights Little Switzerland’s architecture, lodging and shops.
