At a recent Board of Education meeting, Mitchell County Schools Superintendent Chad Calhoun praised district staff members for their efforts to track down a student kidnapped recently.
Earlier this month, Christopher Biederman, 32, was arrested in Ohio for kidnapping a Bakersville 15-year-old.
“They (staff members) went above and beyond — they were searching, they were going from place to place,” Calhoun said. “They spent hours and hours hunting that girl, talking to students.”
Calhoun also also said that school administrative offices will be temporarily moving over to the old Harris building while work is done on the current administrative offices.
“We plan on moving over their Feb. 1, and they should start the remodel the 1st of March,” he said. “That will be our central office for about 15 months.”
Long-term, the plan for the Harris building is to remodel it into a trade school. However, the district is still seeking funding to get that plan started. In the meantime, Calhoun said, significant improvements have been made to Harris to prepare it for temporary use.
“That (building) is unbelievable, how they brought it back to life,” he said. “Things are up and running pretty good over there.”
The next board meeting will be Dec. 18.
