Gary Hyatt and Matthew Staton won the two Bakersville Town Council seats up for election last week.
Bakersville Mayor Charles Vines ran for re-election unopposed and will continue serving in that capacity.
Spruce Pine also had a municipal election, but all of those races were uncontested. Current Town Council Member Beth Holmes was elected as the next mayor, with current Mayor Phillip Hise choosing not to run for re-election.
Larry McKinney and Tessa Taylor were also elected to the Spruce Pine Town Council without opposition.
In Bakersville, Hyatt said he appreciated everyone who took the time to vote in the election.
“I would like to thank all those that took the time to vote,” Hyatt said. “The support they gave Matthew Staton and I will allow us to continue working with the town council to help Bakersville residents and businesses.”
According to the North Carolina Board of Elections, 285 voters took part in these two elections.
In the Bakersville mayoral election, Vines received 60 votes and was opposed by seven miscellaneous write-in votes.
Staton received 45 votes, Hyatt received 41 voters, and challengers Perry Wilson and Andy Palmer received 30 and 28 votes, respectively. There were no write-ins in the Bakersville Town Council election.
In the Spruce Pine election, Holmes received 181 votes, and there were three write-in votes for mayor. McKinney received 171 votes and Taylor received 136 votes, and the Spruce Pine Town Council race included five write-in votes.
