North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed March 2022 as Students@Work Month in North Carolina. Now in its 12th year, students are exposed to numerous careers in our area and can experience first-hand what is expected from employers.

“The skills and opportunities students are exposed to now are critical investments in the development of our workforce,” said Gov. Cooper. “Offering our students a look at careers that may pique their interest is important for them and our future economy.”

Students from Bowman Middle School recently participated by going to work with their parents or guardians for a day.  Any student in grades 5 through 8 were eligible to go to work with their parents or guardian with the permission of their workplace.  More than 60 students from Bowman went to work on March 18.  Participating students were exposed to careers in education, finance, engineering, hospitality, legal, manufacturing and technology along with careers in the public sector.

After completing this day, students were required to write about their day and what they learned.  While many students did not find their “true calling”, many discovered what they did not want to do as their future career.   Students said that employers stressed numerous skills that can make a great employee including being on time, always coming to work, honesty, communication skills, respect for others and being responsible.

Bowman thanked the businesses and parents that made the day reality.
