BAKERSVILLE - Wendy Boone is the new director of the Mitchell County Department of Social Services after being appointed by the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners Monday, July 19 during a special session.

Boone takes over for Interim Director Charles “Chuck” Vines who has served in the role since the unanimous dismissal of former Director Sara Ross in August 2020.

Boone, a Mitchell High graduate,  earned her associate’s degree from Mayland Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Gardner-Webb.

“I can say with absolute confidence that we as a board scrutinize this position and we are very pleased with our choice,” commissioner Brandon Pittman said.

Board Chair Matthew “Vern” Grindstaff followed by congratulating Boone.

“This has been a long, grueling process,” Grindstaff said. “We are pleased to have you and the icing on the cake is that you are a Mitchell County local.”

Commissioner Harley Masters chimed in with her support of Boone.

Commissioner Jeff Harding added that he’s relieved to see the position filled.

“It has been a long process for us to get to this point,” Harding said. “We exhausted a lot of time. We are very proud to say that we have found the right candidate that can make us very proud.”

Boone is expected to start in the new role on Monday, Aug. 2. She is currently employed as a habitation program supervisor with the Children’s Developmental Services Agency of the Blue Ridge.
