Bakersville council seats contested

Voter registration deadline is Friday

Four candidates are vying for two seats on the Bakersville Town Council in November’s election, while Spruce Pine is holding an uncontested election.

The deadline to register to vote is Friday by 4:30 p.m. Municipal elections will be held in both Bakersville and Spruce Pine on Nov. 4. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the day of the election.

In Bakersville, Gary Hyatt, Andy Palmer, incumbent Matthew Staton, and Perry Wilson are running for Bakersville Town Council. Bakersville voters may choose any two of those four candidates for the two available seats.

Incumbent Bakersville Mayor Charles Vines is running for re-election uncontested.

All of the races in Spruce Pine are uncontested — Town Council Member Beth Holmes is running for mayor, and Larry McKinney and Tessa Taylor are running for the two available seats on the town council.

McKinney has served on the Spruce Pine Town Council before but stepped down before his previous term ended.

Neither of the two towns are offering either one-stop voting or absentee-by-mail voting in this election.

Registered voters who live within the town limits of Spruce Pine are eligible to vote in the Spruce Pine election, and registered voters who live within the town limits of Bakersville are eligible to vote in the Bakersville election.
