Pelican’s SnoBalls has arrived in Mitchell County.  The chain that serves up New Orleans-style shaved ice in a myriad of flavors has come to Grassy Creek after Mitchell County’s Luke Stamey brought the brand into the building that used to house Terminix.

SPRUCE PINE — Fitness Express gym will soon be on the move.  The gym will soon transition from its current location at the Cross Street Commerce Center to the building that used to house Flick Video, next to Stamey’s Grocery on U.S. Highway 19E.

Census efforts result in gift to Mitchell County

Participating in the US Census is crucial to the state and federal funding that our county government receives. On average, $1,800 per person per year comes into our county from those sources.

Toys for Tots volunteers help distribute hundreds of toys

SPRUCE PINE — Mitchell County Toys for Tots volunteers on Saturday, Dec. 12 sorted, packaged and distributed toys for more than 300 children. According to Local Coordinating Officer Mark Thomas, Toys for Tots is supporting 325 children in Mitchell County this year.
According to the NCDHHS, Mitchell County has been labeled "red tier" meaning the county is experiencing critical community spread.

Mitchell becomes ‘red tier’ COVID-19 county as cases rise

SPRUCE PINE — As positive cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Mitchell County, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has categorized Mitchell as a critical community spread county.
As of Sunday, Nov. 15, Mitchell County had a total of 418 positive cases, with 78 of those active and 335 recovered. Additionally, there have been six deaths.

SPRUCE PINE — As the holiday season approaches, cases of the novel coronavirus continue to rise in Mitchell County and other rural counties in North Carolina.  As of Sunday, Nov. 15, Mitchell County had a total of 418 positive cases, with 78 of those active and 335 recovered.

Former DSS head files contested case

BAKERSVILLE — Sara Ross, the former Director of the Mitchell County Department of Social Services, has filed a contested case in the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings regarding her dismissal this past August.
