The Mitchell High varsity football team scored early and often in a 63-20 rout of visiting Madison on Friday, Sept. 17.

The Mountaineers throttled the Patriots and improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Western Highlands Conference play behind more than 400 rushing yards and a stingy defense that held the Patriots (2-2, 0-1) to just 142 yards of total offense.

Carter Hoyle got the scoring started for the Mountaineers with a 2-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter. Madison answered just seconds later by returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown.

Mitchell’s Chase Duncan and Ty Turbyfill responded with rushing touchdowns before the Patriots stopped the scoring run with a 51-yard touchdown pass.

Gage Young and Turbyfill each ran for touchdowns late in the second quarter and Duncan registered two rushing touchdowns. Turbyfill found Dalton Hollifield for a 32-yard passing touchdown just before halftime to give Mitchell a 56-13 lead at the break.

Madison earned another passing touchdown early in the third quarter for its final points of the night and Mitchell’s Marley McCourry notched a 15-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the final score 63-20.

Turbyfill racked up a team-high 120 rushing yards on 12 carries. Duncan ran nine times for 108 and Hoyle amassed 76 rushing yards on nine carries. Young ran for 49 yards and McCourry scampered for 60.

Turbyfill completed 4 of 8 passes for 71 yards and one touchdown to Hollifield, who caught a pair of passes for 41 yards, including the scoring play. Ethan Willis caught a pass for 27 yards and Young had one reception.

Mitchell kicker Ben Wessinger made all nine of his extra-point attempts and racked up 467 yards on 10 kickoffs.

The Mitchell defense limited Madison to just nine yards rushing and 133 through the air. Jackson Foxx and Nate Stamey each recovered a fumble.

McCourry was credited with a team-high six tackles. A host of Mountaineers had five tackles each, including Xander Gardner and Chandler Horney.

Mitchell continues its conference slate by traveling to Owen (1-3, 0-1) on Friday, Sept. 24. After that, the Mountaineers come home to host Draughn (2-2, 1-0) on Oct. 1 before enjoying a bye week.
