Mountaineers celebrate 50th anniversary with Homecoming win

The Mitchell Mountaineers gave their fans plenty to cheer about recently, taking down the Polk Wolverines 39-7 in the 50th anniversary homecoming game.

What started out as a stormy evening with lightning, thunder, and heavy rain quickly turned into a picture-perfect night for football. By kickoff, the skies had cleared, and the Mountaineers came out strong, scoring a touchdown in the first minute of the game. Mitchell built a 20-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, added another touchdown in the second, and two more in the third while Polk managed just one. The Mountaineers never looked back, finishing with a 39-7 win.

Homecoming also meant new royalty was crowned, with Piper Cook being named Queen and Hayden Ledford being named King. The halftime celebration added even more excitement to an already special night for Mitchell fans.

Senior wide receiver Deshawn Orr had a big night, finishing with 156 receiving yards and 46 rushing yards.

“Despite the three losses we have had, we are a great all-around team, and we are looking to keeping our head up to be successful,” Orr said. “I think that we are finally coming together as a team. It was a great team win.”

Defensively, Luke Burleson made an impact with four tackles and a sack. After the weather delay, he talked about how the team stayed focused.

“We persevered through the storm,” Burleson said. “The delay couldn’t slow the Mountaineers down.”

The win wasn’t just another game in the books, it was a chance for Mitchell High School to celebrate 50 years of football and tradition. With the stands full and the atmosphere electric, the Mountaineers showed both their pride and their determination for the season ahead.
