The Mitchell Middle School Lady Miners clinched the Western Highlands Middle School Conference Tournament championship on Thursday night, defeating the Madison Middle School lady Patriots 47-33 in front of a loud and raucous crowd of hundreds.
Though the game was tight in the first half, the Lady Miners pulled away in the third quarter with solid defense and shut down the Lady Patriots’ best shooter with intense man-to-man coverage.
With this win, the Lady Miners finished the season undefeated and won the regular season title in addition to their tournament championship.
On the boys’ side, the Miners fought valiantly against the Madison Middle School Patriots, but injuries and untimely fouls resulted in a defeat for Mitchell Middle in their championship game, losing 51-44.
That finishes out the season for both teams, and leaves the eighth graders among them preparing for high school tryouts next year.
