The Mitchell High School Mountaineers concluded their season with a tough loss against an undefeated Corvian Community High School team.
The Corvian Cardinals, entering the game with a flawless 12-0 record, dominated both offensively and defensively, leaving the Mountaineers struggling to keep up throughout the contest.
Corvian Community opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run, quickly putting the Mountaineers behind 7-0. After a brief possession by Mitchell, the Cardinals marched down the field again, extending their lead to 14-0 with a 13-yard rushing touchdown.
Although Mitchell’s defense showed signs of improvement in the second quarter, they faced a setback when the Mountaineers threw an interception just before halftime. That interception was returned 25 yards for a touchdown, sending the Mountaineers into the locker room down 21-0.
The second half mirrored the first, as Corvian Community quickly scored two more touchdowns early in the third quarter, pushing the score to 35-0.
The Mountaineers battled through the second half but could only manage to score with under a minute left in the fourth quarter.
Despite the loss, this season could be viewed as a success for the Mountaineers. Many young, talented players showed promise, and what was anticipated to be a rebuilding year for the team turned into a campaign that kept Mitchell competitive in its division.
The coaching staff worked hard to turn potential losses into wins, and showed that the Mountaineers have a future heading into next year.
