The Mitchell Mountaineers and the Mitchell Miners hosted Swain High School, South Caldwell High School, and Christ School at Mitchell High School for a big night of wrestling recently. But there was more than wins and losses at stake.
The matches were part of “Wrestling Bridges The Gap,” which is a fundraising effort spearheaded by the United States Wrestling Foundation and Team NC Wrestling aimed at raising money for bridge repairs and replacements in Western North Carolina. The recent home match raise more than a thousand dollars for bridge building efforts.
The Mitchell Miners had an impressive showdown with Swain, with more than 30 matchups. Eighth graders Jayceemae Erwin and Evan Payne were bright spots for the miners, as each secured pins against the Maroon Devils.
In women’s varsity action, the Lady Devils outdueled the Lady Mountaineers at every turn, securing a 54-6 victory. The Lady Mountaineers now stand at 3-1 on the season.
On the varsity boys side, Mitchell was outwrestled by a talented South Caldwell team 55-21, but bounced back to secure a solid 60-24 win over Christ School. The win pushes the Mountaineer record to 2-4 on the season.
