For the second consecutive year Connor Warren led Mitchell’s boys golf team to victory at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A state championship.
Despite facing rainy weather conditions at the 7 Lakes Golf Club, the team emerged triumphant, resulting in their second straight state championship title.
The competition, which was delayed and shortened to 27 holes due to heavy rain, mirrored last year’s results, with Mitchell claiming the team title.
Warren’s performance played a pivotal role as he clinched the individual championship. Posting a 1-over par 72 on Monday and an even 35 through nine holes on Tuesday, Warren secured the individual title by three strokes, outperforming Langtree Charter’s Samuel Skoog, who posted a combined score of 110.
Warren’s remarkable achievement places him in esteemed company, as he becomes the third golfer in NCHSAA history to claim three individual state championships.
His performance echoes the legacy of past champions, such as Green Hope’s Brendon Todd.
Amidst the impressive individual performances, Mitchell’s team success was underscored by their repeat victory as the 1A state champion. With a total score of 474, the Mountaineers narrowly outperformed second-place Mount Airy, which finished with a team score of 477.
Other notable performances included Skoog’s improvement on the front nine, securing second place. Colin Ferrick of Christ the King and Shockley Hiatt of Mount Airy finished in a tie for third place, further highlighting the competitive nature of the championship.
