Harris boys roll to four consecutive wins

SPRUCE PINE — The Harris Middle School boys’ basketball team surged its way to four straight wins earlier this month over Bowman, Avery, Cranberry and East Yancey. 

The Blue Devils on Jan. 5 beat Bowman 59-45 and then notched a 59-33 road win at Avery on Jan. 7. 

Harris then beat Cranberry 47-16 on Jan. 13. 

Ian Ledford powered the Blue Devils over Bowman with a team-high 26 points. 

Ledford poured in 17 points at Avery, with Fernando Flores adding 14 points. 

Ledford paced Harris against Cranberry with 15 points. 

The Harris boys beat East Yancey 49-41 on Jan. 14 behind 16 points from Ledford and nine each from John Hedrick and Bryce Miller. 

Girls’ basketball

The Harris girls’ basketball team earned a 39-34 win over Bowman before falling 40-14 at Avery and 33-23 against Cranberry but recovering with a 34-31 win over East Yancey. 

Emma Cook fueled the Blue Devils with a team-high 21 points against Bowman. Grace Willis chipped in nine points and Addison Gregory added seven against the Bulldogs.

In the loss at Avery, Cook and Gregory each scored four points. 

Cook led the way again against Cranberry with 10 points. Gregory added six while Grace Willis scored three and Laila Khan and Ivy Young chipped in a pair of points each. 

The Harris girls edged East Yancey 34-31 on Jan. 14. 

Young led the team with 15 points in the win while Gregory chipped in 11 points and Cook and Willis added six points each.
