Verna Huskins

BAKERSVILLE, N.C.— Verna Vivian Young Huskins, age 92 of Bakersville, NC went home to be with the Lord November 28, 2020. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late James and Daisy Hall Young. Verna was a member of Lily Branch Baptist Church.

 She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her husband Harry Lee Huskins and a son, Ronald Dean Huskins, a brother Warren Young, and sisters, Wilma Boone, Floy Gage, Allie Buchanan, Geneva Boone, and Jean Grindstaff.

 Verna was known as a tough, hard-working woman with a natural mountain wit and an enjoyable nature that made everyone who knew her love her.

 Over the years she worked a number of public jobs including the government Mica Processing Plant in Spruce Pine, WAMY Community Action, Baxter Healthcare and lastly, Pinebridge Inn and Conference Center where she worked into her late 70’s helping keep everything spotless. 

 She loved taking care of her home, tending flowers, planting and growing a garden, and preserving and cooking food, the biggest way she showed her love for someone was to cook. 

She focused much care and concern on the welfare of her children and their families.

 Left to cherish her memory are her children Roger Huskins (Florence) of Conover, NC and Teresa Thomas (Mike) of Spruce Pine, NC and Travis Huskins (Kacey) of Spruce Pine, NC, her brother Bill Young of Spruce Pine, NC her sisters Barbara Young McQueen of Moyock, NC, and Freeda Young Boone of Micaville, NC, her grandchildren Brandy Huskins Buchanan of Conover, NC, Chris, Tony, and Sam Feagins of Tennessee, Chase Thomas and Corbin Huskins of Spruce Pine, NC, also several great grandchildren including Harper Thomas who loved to impress her “Grandma Vern” with her toys and stuffed animals at the window of her room at the Mitchell House during the pandemic shut down. 

 The family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of The Blue Ridge, especially Brittany Pitman, and the staff of Mitchell House who helped to take care of Verna during her last few years. She endeared herself to many there and a special thank you goes to Courtney Buchanan who was a life line from mom to daughter during her last few weeks of life during the pandemic shut down when it was not possible for family to be there.

 A special thank you also goes to the nieces and nephews and their families who visited Verna often and whom she considered children as well.

 A private service for family will be held. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of The Blue Ridge 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777. Henline - Hughes Funeral Home is assisting the Huskins family.
