SPRUCE PINE, N.C.— On Oct.  6, 2021, after a sudden illness, Samuel (Sam) David McKinney, 82, broke the hearts of those who knew him. Surviving are Barbara W. McKinney, his wife of 57 years; sister, Joann Wilfong; brothers: Zeb and James, an infant brother, John and myriad nieces, nephews, and friends.  He is the son of William Charles and Annie Thompson McKinney, and brother to Betty Mace, Dr. Bill, Jr., Neil, and Rev. Brown McKinney, all deceased.

Sam began his working history at Day’s Drug Store in Spruce Pine at the age of 14. After some college and two years’ military service, he then spent his adult years in banking, industry, and his favorite, as owner/operator of the Wilma-Eloise Shop of Spruce Pine.  After retiring, he worked part-time at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital for 17 years.

Sam and Barbara joined First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine in 1975. With his perfect pitch and his love of music, he sang both tenor and bass in the choir for over 30 years, and served as deacon, Sunday school director, teacher, and committee member.

Sam was a loving son and brother— a kind, giving friend to many. To Barbara, “He was the most wonderful husband, lover, best friend, and soul mate I could imagine. With his love, gentleness, and sense of humor, he was my life; I am so grateful for the amazing gift of Sam.  My heart is broken, but he will always be by my side.”

A life celebration service will be held much later.  Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 125 West Tappan St, Spruce Pine, NC 28777, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Mitchell County Humane Society, P.O. Box 308, Spruce Pine, NC 28777. The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and concern. To send online condolences, please visit our website at www.yanceyfuneralservice.com.
