Ruth Glass

TALLAHASSEE, FL.—Dr. Glass went to Heaven on -December 2, 2021.-. She was born in Penland, NC on December 4, 1932, to Garrett Hobert and Lockie Ethel Buchanan Glass. She was the youngest of seven children.

Since her father was a Baptist minister, the family lived in several different communities in NC and Tennessee while she was growing up.

She attended East Tennessee State University, where she met and married Royce Johnson.

When the marriage ended, she returned to the University and received a B.S. in Business Administration. She taught Business Education classes in public high schools in Virginia and NC before settling in Spruce Pine, NC.

She was Director of the Small Business Administration office there for three years, before becoming the Director of a seven-county Appalachian Regional Development Program.

She wrote grants for Federal, State and local projects, such as: building highways and access roads; hospitals; daycare centers; technical and vocational high school and college programs; child development centers in each of the counties; and the funding for the establishment of Mayland Community College.

She then studied at Appalachian State University and received her master’s degree in Higher Education Administration. This was followed by study at Florida State University, where she earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration. Making the decision to stay in Tallahassee, she first began work in the Florida State Department of Administration, later moving to the Florida State Department of Education. She worked as an Educational Consultant to colleges and universities in Florida. She retired in 1995.

For several years, she was a part-owner of Suitably Attired, Inc. She volunteered with the Character and Heritage Institute.

Moving to Thomasville, GA, she was a member of the Thomasville First United Methodist Church. She volunteered with Archbold Hospital, Backpack Buddies, and the Food Bank.

She never lost contact with her native NC and visited there often. Her family had very close and loving ties, and she was an “Auntie Mame” to her siblings’ children. She was the last survivor of her family’s generation, having survived her parents; her siblings: Ray Glass (Lela), Robert Glass (Bea), George Glass, Grace Taylor (Robert), Christine Biggerstaff (Paul) and Helen Rossman (George); as well as three nephews (John Glass, Ray Glass and Ronnie Biggerstaff).

She is survived by her closest nephew and his family, John Keith Taylor, who has been her healthcare/legal advocate; by four other nephews and their families: Stephen Taylor, Gary Rossman, George Glass (Lois Glass) and Gary Glass; three nieces and their families: Patricia Glass Young, Kim Glass and Sandra Glass.
